A molecular sieve, like our 5A type, is a crystalline material characterized by a network of uniform pores. The '5A' designation refers to the effective pore opening size, which is approximately 5 angstroms (0.5 nm). This specific pore size is the secret to its selective adsorption power. Molecules with a kinetic diameter smaller than 5 angstroms can enter the pores and be adsorbed onto the internal surface of the sieve, while molecules larger than this threshold are excluded.
This principle of size exclusion is vital for processes such as the separation of normal- and iso-paraffins in the petrochemical industry. Normal paraffins are linear molecules that can fit into the 5A sieve's pores, while branched or cyclic hydrocarbons, being larger, are kept out.
