Achieving High Mobility in OFETs: The Art of Spin-Coating TIPS-Pentacene Blends

Specifically, we observe that shorter spin times, which leave more residual solvent, tend to promote one-dimensional (1D) crystal growth. While these structures exhibit strong molecular stacking, the presence of significant gaps between crystals can hinder efficient charge transport. Conversely, by optimizing the spin-coating time, we can achieve a state with an ideal amount of residual solvent, leading to two-dimensional (2D) crystal growth. These 2D spherulites, characterized by larger grain sizes and a more continuous film structure, offer superior pathways for charge carriers, thereby significantly improving OFET mobility with TIPS-pentacene. This transition to 2D crystals is key to unlocking the material's full potential.

The ability to control the morphology and crystallinity through spin-coating is fundamental to fabricating high-performance OFETs. The enhanced charge transport in films with optimal 2D crystal growth of TIPS-pentacene translates directly into higher mobility values.
