Through bridging mechanisms, these particles are bound together, forming larger flocs. These larger flocs are much more likely to be captured by the forming paper sheet on the wire screen of the paper machine, rather than passing through with the water (white water). Improved retention means less loss of valuable materials like fillers and fine fibers, leading to reduced raw material costs and a cleaner effluent stream. This also contributes to better opacity and smoothness of the finished paper.

Simultaneously, APAM acts as a drainage aid. The flocs formed by APAM allow water to drain more freely from the fiber slurry. This faster drainage on the paper machine wire reduces the amount of water that needs to be removed in the subsequent pressing and drying stages. Enhanced drainage can lead to increased machine speeds, higher production output, and reduced energy consumption in the drying process. The improved dewatering of the paper web also contributes to a more uniform sheet structure.
