Proper preparation is key to optimizing performance. The polymer should be dissolved in water under low agitation to achieve a solution concentration between 0.01% and 0.05%. Full dissolution is typically achieved within 60 minutes, with warmer water potentially accelerating the process, though temperatures exceeding 50°C should be avoided. For optimal results, further dilution with clean water is recommended before introducing the solution into the process stream. It is crucial to avoid turbulent mixing conditions in the process stream after the cationic flocculant has been added to preserve floc integrity.

Typical treatment levels vary depending on the specific application. For dewatering processes involving municipal or industrial wastewater sludge using belt presses, screw presses, filter presses, or centrifuges, dosage rates typically range from 0.1% to 1% based on the dry solid content. In air flotation of activated sludge or paper mill fines, treatment levels are usually between 0.1 ppm and 5 ppm. Similarly, for thickening, clarification, or treatment of elutriated, digested primary, and waste activated sludge, dosage falls within the 0.1 ppm to 5 ppm range.

Handling the material requires care due to its hygroscopic nature; exposure to air should be minimized. Spilled polymer is very slippery and should be carefully scooped or wiped before attempting to flush with water to prevent slips and falls.
