Skin and eye contact usually results in minimal, transient irritation. It has not been shown to cause sensitization, carcinogenicity, or genotoxicity in laboratory studies. However, a small percentage of individuals may experience allergic contact dermatitis to propylene glycol, manifesting as a rash. Environmentally, PG is readily biodegradable in water and soil and is not considered persistent, although large quantities can exert high biochemical oxygen demand during degradation.
