This acid acts as a catalyst for dehydration and carbonization, leading to the formation of a protective char layer on the surface of the polypropylene. This char layer acts as a thermal barrier, insulating the polymer from heat and oxygen, and significantly hindering its decomposition into flammable gases. The formation of this stable char is a critical step in preventing flame propagation.

In the gas phase, both phosphorus and nitrogen compounds play a vital role. During combustion, volatile phosphorus-containing species and nitrogen-containing radicals can be released. These species can interrupt the highly energetic, free-radical chain reactions that sustain the flame. By scavenging these highly reactive radicals, the P-N system effectively cools the flame and reduces its intensity, further contributing to the self-extinguishing properties of the material. This synergistic action between the condensed and gas phases makes P-N systems particularly efficient.
