The Science Behind UV Protection: How HALS Extend Product Life

The relentless assault of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun poses a significant threat to the integrity and lifespan of many materials. Polymers, in particular, are vulnerable to a process known as photodegradation, where UV energy initiates a cascade of chemical reactions that break down their molecular structure. The 'hindered amine' structure is key to its function. When UV exposure breaks polymer bonds, it generates highly reactive free radicals. The amine group within the HALS molecule can readily donate a hydrogen atom to these free radicals, thereby neutralizing them and stopping the chain reaction. The HALS molecule itself is then regenerated through subsequent reactions, allowing a single HALS molecule to neutralize many free radicals over its effective lifespan. This catalytic cycle makes HALS exceptionally efficient and long-lasting.
