From Succinic Acid to Succinimide: A Greener Synthesis Pathway

Succinimide is a valuable intermediate with diverse applications in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and material science. Traditionally, its synthesis might involve less sustainable routes. However, a groundbreaking approach leverages succinic acid, particularly that derived from biomass, to produce succinimide through a more environmentally conscious pathway. This method, developed by NINGBO INNO PHARMCHEM CO.,LTD., centers on the synthesis of succinimide from succinic acid-urea co-crystals.

The process begins with the efficient recovery of succinic acid, as detailed previously, often from fermentation broths. The purified succinic acid is then utilized in a co-crystallization step with urea. This succinic acid-urea co-crystal serves as the direct precursor for succinimide synthesis. The reaction requires careful optimization of several parameters to maximize yield and purity.

Key to this greener synthesis is the precise control of the succinic acid to urea mass ratio, with a 2:1 ratio found to be optimal. The addition of a catalyst, such as phosphorous acid (approximately 4.2% of the succinic acid mass), significantly accelerates the reaction. The reaction is conducted at a high temperature of 195°C for a period of 6 hours. Under these conditions, the yield of succinimide can reach an impressive 80% or more.

Following the synthesis, crude succinimide can be further purified through recrystallization, typically from ethanol, to achieve the desired high purity.
