The synthesis primarily involves the reaction of succinic acid with urea. While the basic reaction can occur, maximizing the succinimide yield is dependent on fine-tuning the conditions. One of the most significant factors influencing the reaction equilibrium and rate is temperature. The reaction of succinic acid and urea to form succinimide is an endothermic process. According to the Le Chatelier's principle, increasing the temperature will shift the equilibrium towards the products, thus favoring succinimide formation. Extensive studies have determined that a reaction temperature of 195°C is optimal. At this elevated temperature, the reaction proceeds efficiently, driving the conversion of succinic acid and urea into succinimide. However, care must be taken to avoid excessively high temperatures that could lead to unwanted side reactions or product degradation.

Another critical element in enhancing the succinimide synthesis yield is the use of a catalyst. Phosphorous acid has been identified as a highly effective catalyst for this conversion. The role of phosphorous acid is to accelerate the reaction rate, allowing the system to reach equilibrium faster and thus shortening the required reaction time while increasing the overall yield. The optimal amount of phosphorous acid is approximately 4.2% of the mass of succinic acid. This precise dosage ensures efficient catalysis without introducing excess material that could complicate downstream purification.

When these optimized conditions are applied – a 2:1 mass ratio of succinic acid to urea, approximately 4.2% phosphorous acid catalyst, a reaction temperature of 195°C, and a reaction time of 6 hours – the succinimide yield can consistently reach over 80%.
