At its core, SDS is an anionic surfactant, meaning it possesses a negatively charged hydrophilic head attached to a long, hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail. This amphiphilic structure is the key to its functionality. In aqueous solutions, SDS molecules arrange themselves to minimize contact between their hydrophobic tails and water. Below a certain concentration, known as the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC), SDS exists primarily as individual monomers.
However, once the CMC is reached (approximately 8.2 mM for SDS at 25°C), SDS molecules spontaneously aggregate into spherical structures called micelles. In these micelles, the hydrophobic tails cluster inwards, shielded from water, while the hydrophilic heads form the outer surface, interacting with the surrounding aqueous environment. This ability to form micelles is fundamental to its detergent action.
