Carbon Molecular Sieve is a specially processed form of activated carbon that possesses a unique pore structure. Unlike standard activated carbon, CMS features precisely controlled pore sizes, typically in the mesopore and micropore ranges. This fine-tuning allows for the selective adsorption of gas molecules based on their size and kinetic diameter. For PSA nitrogen generation, this means CMS exhibits a preferential and rapid adsorption of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and moisture from compressed air, while allowing nitrogen molecules, which are slightly larger, to pass through.
How CMS Works in PSA Nitrogen Generators
A typical PSA nitrogen generator utilizes two adsorber vessels filled with CMS. Compressed air is fed into one vessel, where the CMS selectively adsorbs oxygen. The nitrogen gas, being less adsorbed, flows through the vessel and is collected as the product. Simultaneously, the other vessel, having completed its adsorption cycle, is depressurized to atmospheric pressure. This depressurization releases the adsorbed oxygen, regenerating the CMS for the next adsorption cycle. By alternating these processes between the two vessels, a continuous flow of high-purity nitrogen is produced.
