At its core, foam is a dispersion of gas in a liquid, stabilized by surface-active agents that form elastic films around the gas bubbles. These films resist rupture, allowing foam to persist. The primary mechanism for many defoamers, including mineral oil-based types, involves their low surface tension and limited solubility in the foaming medium.
When introduced into a foaming system, a mineral oil defoamer, often containing specialized additives like hydrophobic silica or polyether compounds, rapidly spreads across the surface of the foam bubbles. Because the defoamer's components are less surface-active than the original foaming agents and possess a strong hydrophobic character, they tend to migrate to the air-liquid interface.
