Product Overview
Zinc acrylate is a metal salt of unsaturated carboxylic acid, specifically formulated as anhydrous zinc acrylate. It serves as a highly effective crosslinking agent in peroxide-vulcanized rubber systems, enabling the formation of dynamic 'ionic' crosslinks between polymer chains. These ionic bonds exhibit unique thermally reversible characteristics—capable of sliding along hydrocarbon backbones and self-restoring—thereby combining the mechanical robustness of sulfur vulcanization with the thermal stability of peroxide curing.
Industrial Applications
This specialty chemical is widely utilized across two primary sectors: the rubber industry and sports equipment manufacturing. In rubber compounding, zinc acrylate significantly enhances adhesion between rubber and metal substrates (e.g., steel cords), improves heat resistance, and boosts tensile and tear strengths without compromising processability. It is compatible with a broad range of elastomers including EPDM, HNBR, BR, NR, SBR, CPE, silicone, and fluoroelastomers.
In the golf ball industry, zinc acrylate has been the gold-standard crosslinker for polybutadiene rubber cores for decades. The resulting vulcanizate delivers exceptional resilience, high compression resistance, and superior rebound performance—critical attributes for premium golf balls.
Key Performance Benefits
- Enhances tensile and tear strength in peroxide-cured rubber compounds
- Improves adhesion to metals, glass, and coated surfaces—even under oily conditions
- Imparts excellent thermal aging resistance and ozone stability
- Maintains compound processability with minimal impact on flow
- Reduces permanent compression set and improves low-temperature flexibility
